InterClass Supervised messaging for students at school
InterClass is a school messaging app. Students can message friends they've both approved, but only during lunch and brunch windows their school sets. Messages are plain text, checked by a language filter before they send, and students can always message their linked parent or guardian.
How InterClass works
Sign in with a school account
Students choose their school and sign in with their school Google account. Each school only accepts its own student email addresses.
Add friends, both ways
Students add friends by school email. A friendship only starts once both people accept.
Message at lunch
During the lunch and brunch windows the school sets, friends can message each other. Outside them, messaging between students is off.
Built to keep messaging safe
- The school sets the schedule. Staff choose when the lunch and brunch windows are.
- School accounts only. Sign-in is limited to the school's own student email domain.
- Parents stay in the loop. Messaging with friends stays off until a parent or guardian links to the student and confirms consent.
- Text only, one-to-one. No links, photos, videos, files or group chats.
- Filtered before sending. Messages with inappropriate language are blocked before they go out.
- Protected staff access. School staff sign in with a password and a second verification code, and message text is stored encrypted.
For parents
Link to your child with a code from their account, confirm consent, and message them any time. You can't see their chats with other students.
How it works for parentsFor schools
You decide when messaging is on, who can join, and your staff sign in with two-step verification. InterClass is in a pilot.
What schools controlCommon questions
What is InterClass?
InterClass is a school messaging app for students, parents and school staff. Students can message friends they have both approved during lunch and brunch windows their school sets, and can always message their linked parent or guardian. Messages are text only, and a language filter checks them before they send.
When can students message each other?
Only during the lunch and brunch windows that school staff set, for example a lunch period. Outside those windows, messaging between students is switched off. Messages with a linked parent or guardian work at any time.
Who can sign up?
Students sign up with their school Google account after choosing their school, and each school only accepts its own student email addresses. Parents create an account on their phone and link to their child with a code from the child's account.
Can parents read their child's messages with friends?
No. A parent can see and send messages in their own conversation with their child, but not their child's conversations with other students.
What can students send?
Text only. There are no links, photos, videos or file attachments, and messages containing inappropriate language are blocked before they are sent. Conversations are one-to-one, with no group chats.
Does a parent have to agree first?
Yes. A student's messaging with friends stays off until a parent or guardian has linked to their account and confirmed consent.
Do I need to install anything?
Students use InterClass in a web browser on a laptop or Chromebook. Parents use it on their phone.
Is InterClass available at my school?
InterClass is currently in a pilot, so it is not open to every school yet. The For schools page explains what getting started involves.
